Volvo is busy preparing its entry to the mid-size sedan market in the shape of the S60, which will feature radical new styling under the direction of design chief Steve Mattin. Having already developed the XC60 concept, Mattin’s next job is to give the S60 a bold new face that will compete with the German triumvirate.
Our friends at Auto Motor & Sport Sweden managed to score a peek at design sketches for the new S60 the day before the Geneva Auto Show and their journalist relayed the impressions to a 3D artist, who created these images.

Due to a lack of funds Ford decided to halt production of the S60 for 6 months, but AMS reports that things are back in full swing for a 2009/2010 release date. According to their discussion with Mattin, Volvo wants to make the S60 more unique and an interesting alternative to the usual suspects. The goal is to hit 600,000 cars sold per year in 2010, up from the 450,000 mark at the moment.

Nice blog. The thing is, no matter what Volvo does, it will be difficult to gain the market share they deserve. Infiniti has beent trying for years and they still can't get themselves where they need to be.
ruffwake's comments are well noted and he/she is correct except for one detail. Like my myself, there are many European car snobs out there who just will not by a Japanese car. I have often said if if I did buy one, it would be an Infiniti, but I still haven't and probably will never.
Well looks good as usual. But too many parts come from Ford. It can not be good, just think about it. It is suicide to go for a Volvo instead a Japanese car.

I wonder if the poster who thinks too many parts come from Ford has any notion of what those parts are? What do you mean by suicide? How is it suicide to eschew buying a mass market Asian death trap in favor of a car from the manufacture that has been the safety leader for over eighty years? Do you have any idea what you're talking about or are you just "riffing" on the secondhand knowledge that Ford currently owns Volvo?
this new volvo is long awaited, and for those who feel that it is just a ford are wrong. even today the ford parts in a volvo are less than 1%. and they drive off the boats already to go.i can't wait to drive the new s60.
Volvo has for years shown a brand that is still recognized today as a
safe car and more often than not safety is about conservatism.
As a result Volvo is now looking at a slicker and more attractive look to compete with all the while not sacrificing safety. European cars are and still have strong branding instilled in a lot of minds. I don't mind japanese cars but when it comes to the upper echelon of vehicles European design in my books is still ahead.
I can't wait for the New S60.
I really hope that this is a joke! Is that what it's going to look like? Why didn't they kept their authenticity and style? To be onest it looks like an opel vectra facelift :( I am a huge volvo fan. And I am so sorry to see the best car brand in the world doing a shape like that. Dissapointing! Wake up, VOLVO team!!! You're making a fool of yourself. I just love the new s80, but this is rubbish. I just can't belive it.........
Everyone who said something about Volvo's Ford parts in this new S60 is an idiot. Has anyone realized that Ford sold Volvo...last year? Research is a beautiful thing. :P
