Geneva: Maserati Coupe Preview

The countdown has begun for the model that restored Maserati’s name to glory; according to Quattroruote, the Italian firm will give us a sneak peek of the all-new Coupe next Tuesday, prior to its official debut at the Geneva Show in March. Apart from the name change, perhaps the most significant news is the fact that Maserati has ditched Giugiaro for Pininfarina. What we’re seeing here are early-stage sketches obtained from Pininfarina. We’ll have more on the Coupe’s successor later on the weekend.

PRESS RELEASE:

Kia cee'd Sporty Wagon

The all-new Kia cee'd Sporty Wagon will make its world premiere at the 77th Salon de l’Automobiles in Geneva on 6 March, in production-ready form with a unique extended tailgate for maximum accessibility to the luggage area.

“The new Kia cee’d Sporty Wagon retains all the attributes of the cee’d hatchback and offers consumers extra practicality and versatility, with a unique extended tailgate design, while keeping stylish stand-alone good looks with a truly sporty feel,” enthused Mr Jean-Charles Lievens, Senior Vice President Kia Motors Europe. “With ride, handling and performance every bit as responsive as the hatchback, the Sporty Wagon will be available with a similar choice of engines and specifications. The Sporty Wagon is sure to delight existing Kia customers and to attract European consumers who have not yet considered our brand.”

The 4.5-metre long cee’d Sporty Wagon has an unusually long wheelbase and will offer class-leading passenger and luggage space, plus highly competitive levels of equipment and state-of-the-art active and passive safety. Customers in Europe will be able to choose from a line-up of 18 Sporty Wagons, with three equipment levels (LX, EX and TX), five engines, with manual or automatic transmissions, and an extensive range of optional equipment.

To boost load carrying ability and versatility, the wagon’s overall length is increased by 235 mm, with all of that increase behind the rear wheels, and overall height is up by 10 mm. Luggage capacity goes up to a total of 534 litres – loaded up to the bottom of the rear windows – almost 200 litres more than the cee’d hatchback.

The tailgate on the cee’d Sporty Wagon is unique in the C-segment, and designed to give excellent access to the load area. The top hinges have been moved forward by 225 mm (compared to the cee’d hatchback), so the tailgate has reduced outswing and upswing, allowing users to stand closer to the car and the tailgate to be fully opened, even in restricted parking spaces.

For its new cee’d Sporty Wagon, Kia will be offering most customers the same choice of five Euro4 compliant engines and transmissions as the hatchback model – depending on individual markets. Power outputs range from 90 to 143 ps, including an all-new, highly responsive 1.6-litre 115 ps diesel engine designed, engineered and manufactured by Kia in Slovakia.

The launch of the Kia cee’d family (five-door hatchback from December last year, five-door Sporty Wagon – from August and three-door Sporty Hatch – from December) marks a major turning point in Kia’s history. The bringing of this trio to the marketplace is the start of a new era. They are the first-ever Kia cars designed and manufactured in Europe and will introduce a qualitative revolution for the brand.

Bitter building limo based on Holden Statesman

German automotive outfit Bitter Cars will be making a comeback with a new limousine based on the Holden-sourced Statesman (above), which it will showcase at this year’s Frankfurt International Auto Show. Bitter has a long history of building cars based on models from Opel, but this time looked elsewhere within the GM stable as Opel no longer has a decent large sedan.

The Statesman is powered by a 340hp 6.0L V8 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, and this drivetrain is unlikely to be changed for the car being developed. Bitter is no stranger to modifying cars from Holden. In 2003 it displayed a car based on the Monaro coupe at the Geneva Motor Show labelled the CD2.

According to the Dutch site Autoweek.nl, the new Bitter limo will be going into limited production, with the first models scheduled to be delivered soon after the Frankfurt show.

PRESS RELEASE:

Cyberspace Version of the Mazda Hakaze Concept Car now at Second Life

Mazda’s latest concept car, Mazda Hakaze, is now available for driving in cyberspace on Nagare Island at Second Life. By launching its latest show car in virtual form, Mazda Motor Europe is responding to the very positive reaction to Mazda’s trilogy of concepts shown around the world last year. Mazda Senku, Kabura and Sassou were so popular, in fact, that people wanted to buy and drive them as soon as possible. With a single concept car, this has never been possible of course, so Mazda Motor Europe has done the next best thing. Mazda Hakaze is now available to the almost 3 million Second Life residents to drive and own.

Experience Mazda Hakaze at Second Life

With the official launch of the cyberspace version of Mazda Hakaze, people from around the globe now have the chance to experience some of the concept’s attributes in virtual reality. After free registration at SecondLife.com and downloading the appropriate software, cyber pilots can teleport to Nagare Island where the Mazda Hakaze will appear on a platform. It duplicates itself and they can then drive the design concept on a challenging test track around the island that includes a difficult jump. If they master this jump, and demonstrate they are competent to drive the car, they get to keep it.

Mazda Introduces Kite-surfing to Second Life

But residents can do more than just drive. The cyber-Hakaze also comes with a virtual kite-surfing board in the back. This can be taken out and used, after downloading some animations, for doing basic moves with the board – basic because Mazda wants the inhabitants of Second Life to use their creative talent and develop additional kite-surfing tricks and share them with the community.Cruising down to the beach, taking out the board and having a go at kite-surfing in cyberspace – a new sport to Second Life – and maybe even inventing a new move or two, all this promises to be a fun way to get to know Mazda’s compact crossover concept with roadster feel.

Kite-board Design Contest

Those Second Life residents, who have mastered the jump at Nagare Island and own a car, are eligible to participate in a design competition with a real, First Life prize to be won. Participants can download a kite-board with nothing on it, then decorate both sides with their own Zoom-Zoom design and send it to Mazda Motor Europe. The contest will last from 16 February to 4 March 2007 and the best designs will be put online at Nagare Island, where visitors can vote for their favourite design. A single winner will then be announced in March and receive a statue of his or her avatar, which will hold a facsimile of the board with the winning design on it.

Mitsubishi i Confirmed For Sale in the UK

Beginning on July 1st, Brits will be able to purchase the iconic i kei car from Mitsubishi. The i is a big hit in Japan, having won numerous awards for its futuristic styling and clever engineering while racking up big sales in the home market. Mitsubishi has spent the last year shopping the i around Great Britain at the Badminton Horse Trials, the British Motor Show and some select Mitsubishi dealerships, and the response from the public was positive enough to convince management to sell the car on the Queen's isle. It will be available only in one configuration powered by the JDM spec 660cc turbo three-cylinder engine producing an economical though not entirely thrilling 64bhp. Initially, however, only 300 units will be made available for sale at the price of £8,999 ($17,577 USD).

With the success of the MINI Cooper and the impending arrival of the smart fortwo in the U.S., we wonder if there are talks within Mitsubishi to bring the i to the U.S. They'll no doubt be watching sales of the fortwo closely.

PRESS RELEASE:

MITSUBISHI “i” TO GO ON SALE IN THE UK

Mitsubishi Motors UK has confirmed that the multi-award winning Mitsubishi “i” minicar will go on sale in the UK on 1st July 2007, with one highly-specified model to be launched priced at £8,999. The rear-mid-engined, four-seater “i” has already achieved cult status in Japan where it has proved both a critical and commercial success due to its futuristic styling, agile handling, clever use of interior space and comfortable ride.

Over 37,000 units were sold in Japan during 2006 and a string of automotive and design awards culminated in the “i” being named “RJC Car of the Year” by the Automotive Researchers & Journalists of Japan (RJC). Critics and customers alike have been seduced by the efficiency of the “i”’s 64bhp, 660cc turbo engine and the practical advantages of its rear-mid-engined configuration.

The decision to import the “i” follows an extensive feasibility study. Jim Tyrrell, Managing Director of Mitsubishi Motors UK stated: “We displayed the “i” at Badminton Horse Trials, the British Motor Show and at a number of key dealerships around the country and the public reaction was wholly positive. The “i” has already become a cult car in Japan and we’re confident that its space and sophistication, coupled with Mitsubishi’s reputation for quality and reliability, will also make it a hit in the UK.”

The “i” will be sold through selected Mitsubishi dealers with an initial availability of just 300 units. With deposits already being placed, the “i” may well have already attracted a small following of its own here in the UK.

THE CONCEPT

“i” is a play on the Japanese word “ai” meaning love, which emphasises the car’s people and eco-friendly properties. It is also designed to be intelligent, innovative and imaginative.

Mitsubishi’s feasibility study suggests the “i” will appeal to a wide range of people. While the younger style-conscious buyer appreciates its distinctive image and technology; older customers are attracted by its practicality, reliability and ease-of-use.

ONE HIGHLY-SPECIFIED MODEL

Just one highly-specified version of the “i” will be offered in the UK. Designed as an innovative premium small car, standard equipment will include automatic transmission, climate control, a six-speaker stereo with CD player, front and rear electric windows and electrically operated and folding door mirrors.

THE ENGINE

The “i” is powered by an all-alloy, 660cc three-cylinder petrol engine that combines a turbocharger and intercooler with MIVEC variable valve timing. The engine delivers 64bhp at 6000rpm and 69lb ft (93Nm) of torque at 3000rpm, helping the “i” accelerate from 0 to 50mph in 11.2sec and reach a top speed of around 90mph. Drive is to the rear wheels via an INVECS-II 4-speed automatic transmission, which helps reduce the stress of city driving.

THE DYNAMICS

The “i” employs a unique, aluminium space-frame chassis, which is both lightweight and exceptionally strong. This has benefits for both occupant protection and the performance of the suspension, which consists of MacPherson struts at the front and a 3-link De Dion system at the rear. The long wheelbase and near-perfect weight distribution has enabled the engineers to combine a comfortable ride quality with nippy handling. A tiny turning radius of 4.5m is also a major boon in the city.

EXTERIOR STYLE

The “i”’s futuristic styling capitalises on its rear-mid-engined configuration. It was designed at Mitsubishi’s design studio in Tokyo and its distinctive, one-box shape maximises cabin space. It’s neat, practical and appealing.

Unusual dimensions lend it a key advantage in the cut-and-thrust of city driving. The “i” is 155mm narrower than the Peugeot 107, helping it to squeeze through gaps in the traffic that would normally be reserved for a motorbike. It is also shorter than its key rivals, but the wheel-at-each corner proportions deliver a wheelbase that’s longer than a full-size supermini. This has advantages for both passenger accommodation and driving dynamics.

The success of Mitsubishi’s design has been recognised in Japan at the highest level with “i” not only taking a ‘Good Design Gold Prize’ but also beating over 2,000 entries to secure the overall Grand Prize for 2006 in the highly-prestigious Japanese Good Design Awards. The “i” is the first minicar to win this prize which is given to the most outstanding entry among all categories.

INTERIOR PRACTICALITY

The cabin highlights the benefits of a rear-mid-engined configuration by providing ample space for four adults and their luggage. Head room is particularly generous and the simple, high quality fascia contributes to the feeling of comfort. There’s also plenty of storage space and the rear seat back splits and folds to allow larger objects to be carried.

The “i” is the first Japanese car to use Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified hypoallergenic seat fabric. Working in combination with a deodorant roof lining and a clean air filter for the standard automatic air conditioning, this fabric helps purify the cabin. This is of major benefit to allergy sufferers.

HIGH LEVEL OF ACTIVE AND PASSIVE SAFETY

The standard ABS with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution) helps the driver avoid an accident, but should the worst happen, occupants are protected by twin front airbags and a sophisticated survival cell. ISOFIX child seat mounting points and anti-trap electric windows help safeguard the next generation, while an innovative energy-absorbing wiper pivot under the bonnet reduces the risk of injury to a pedestrian.

Geneva: Hyundai HED-4 Concept

Hyundai will showcase the production version of its Arnejs hatchback at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, ahead of the model’s market launch by mid this year. Also gracing the stands will be an all-new crossover-SUV concept, of which Hyundai has already released an initial sketch. The vehicle is being touted as an enviro-friendly SUV that will score high in pedestrian security.

Like the Arnejs concept first displayed at the Paris Auto Show last year, this new concept was also designed at Hyundai’s new studio in Russelsheim, Germany. If it were ever to go into production, the vehicle would most likely be constructed at one of the Korean company’s factories in either Slovakia or the Czech Republic.

Hyundai will also reveal its new alphanumeric naming system. So far Hyundai’s were labeled with simply a unique name. Now, the names will be based on alphabet letters and numbers designating the model and most likely engine capacity.

Sister company Kia will be displaying its own cee’d wagon for the first time in full production-ready form. Significantly larger than the hatchback, the new wagon boasts up to 534L of storage, 200L up on the regular five-door. The new cee’d wagon will be built alongside the five-door and three-door versions at the Zilina plant in Slovakia, with sales to start soon after the Geneva launch.

PRESS RELEASE:

THREE WORLD PREMIERES FROM HYUNDAI AT THE 2007 GENEVA MOTOR SHOW

*C-segment hatchback world premiere
*New product naming strategy to be introduced
*Advanced materials concept SUV with outstanding pedestrian safety

Hyundai Motor Company will unveil its new European C-segment hatchback at its press conference at the Geneva Motor Show on Tuesday 6 March 2007. Codenamed “FD”, this will be the first ever car from the Korean manufacturer designed specifically for Europe.

In developing the FD, Hyundai focused on combining cultivated dynamics with sleek, sophisticated styling, generous equipment levels and up-to-the-minute safety package. The car is due to go on sale across Europe in the summer.

With the launch of FD, Hyundai will simultaneously introduce a new alphanumerical naming strategy for all its products going forward. In the past, product names have been chosen to express the values inherent in, or associated with, each individual Hyundai model. Now, however, Hyundai is taking a more holistic approach to its vehicle nomenclature.

The new nomenclature will display a clearer technology-orientation and be closely linked to Hyundai’s brand promise of “Quality, Self-assurance, and Inspiring”. Managing Director of Hyundai Motor UK Ltd, Tony Whitehorn, said: “Geneva marks a significant turning point in the history of Hyundai, which has grown at a phenomenal rate in its relatively brief history to become the world’s sixth largest motor manufacturer.

“The launch of FD, combined with the new naming strategy, the imminent arrival of a 300,000 unit European manufacturing facility and new advanced R&D facilities and European Headquarters in Germany, signals Hyundai’s development into a mainstream European manufacturer with serious intentions to provide high quality and affordable cars designed and built specifically to European tastes.”

New Concept Offers Glimpse of the Future

As the latest example of its advanced vehicle research, Hyundai will also present a crossover-SUV concept at its Geneva press conference. Using advanced materials from its co-operation partner GE Plastics, Hyundai’s European designers have developed an SUV that is environmentally friendly and also offers outstanding results in computer-animated pedestrian safety tests.

2008 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

The G-Class is the most enduring model from Mercedes-Benz. Introduced in 1979, the G hardly looks different than the model that debuted 28 years ago. It has received plenty of enhancements, and Mercedes has just announced another slew of updates that will keep this original SUV relatively "fresh" for even longer.

The exterior has been left predominately untouched except for new taillights sporting an "LED look". The interior, however, has been warmed over with a new instrument cluster, steering wheel, modified center stack and redesigned switches. Some additional optiions have also been added to eek out a few more bucks from the big stars that buy these behemoths. The new options include a reversing camera, tire-pressuring monitoring system, a sports exhaust system for the G500 that's basically identical to the one used on the G 55 AMG, and a couple new interior packages, one of which includes "Cognac" leather. The new G wagon is available for sale in Europe now with deliveries expected by April. There has been no word whether it will be brought over to our shores.

PRESS RELEASE:

Facelift for Mercedes-Benz G-Class: Latest generation of the classic cross-country vehicle now with an even classier specification

Stuttgart, Feb 15, 2007
Mercedes-Benz has refined its G-Class yet again. The interior has been injected with fresh appeal courtesy of a new, high-grade instrument cluster, an attractively styled steering wheel which is also new, as well as a modified centre console with redesigned switches plus a new-look control unit for the air conditioning. Outside, the latest generation of the G-Class can be identified by the design of its tail light units with their sophisticated LED look. These facelift measures see Mercedes-Benz hold true to its philosophy of making sure that this classic vehicle - which has been in production for over quarter of a century now - is equipped with a comfortable, up-to-date interior on a par with the best saloons, along with state-of-the-art technology. By so doing, it preserves the exclusive status of the G-Class as a full-blooded cross-country vehicle blended with the very finest lifestyle qualities.

The first Mercedes-Benz G-Class unveiled in 1979 was designed predominantly with tough off-road terrain in mind. Over the many years of its production, Mercedes engineers have adapted the G-Class to changing customer requirements. It boasted outstanding off-road capabilities right from the outset, but its all-terrain prowess has been continuously improved on by the addition of the latest electronics. Its exceptional performance off the beaten track, excellent towing abilities and balanced handling characteristics combined with its saloon-like ambience have resulted in the G-Class enjoying an extraordinarily long production career, which now extends to 28 years.

With its most recent facelift, Mercedes-Benz has added further touches of class to its cross-country classic. This is particularly true inside the G-Class where a new instrument cluster gives the interior a sophisticated look. Four circular analogue dials with chrome-ring surrounds form the nerve centre for driver information. Also sporting a new design is the elegant four-spoke multifunction steering wheel, whose illuminated buttons drivers can simply press with their thumbs to call up various data or control certain functions without being distracted from the road. The G 320 CDI comes with a leather-trimmed steering wheel as standard, whilst the luxurious wood/leather version awaits G 500 and G 55 AMG drivers.

Common to all three G-Class models is the modified centre console with its new controls and switches for the air conditioning and convenience functions. Not only does the new centre console give the cockpit added visual appeal, it is designed to make operating the controls more foolproof. The standard specification for the G 500 and G 55 AMG models includes the COMAND APS control and display unit featuring DVD navigation system, built-in radio, CD player and telephone keypad. A compass function has also been integrated to allow drivers to easily get their bearings even when they have left the signposted routes far behind them. The compass can be set to show the current heading in either the new instrument cluster's display or on the COMAND screen.

The COMAND APS system can also be specified as an option for the G 320 CDI. This model is fitted as standard with the Audio 20 radio featuring CD player and telephone keypad instead of the previous Audio 10 unit. The entry-level model now also comes with heated front seats at no extra cost. The new 12V power socket in the front-passenger footwell of all models in the G-Class range allows for straightforward connection of auxiliary electrical appliances.

From outside, the newest generation of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class can be recognised from its tail lights, which have been remodelled by the designers to give them a fresh, new, LED-style look.

New attractive optional extras available

To coincide with the facelift, Mercedes-Benz has added some new enticing items to its list of optional extras for the G-Class. These include the following highlights:

*a reversing camera which shows drivers the scene behind the vehicle on the new COMAND unit's 6.5-inch screen;
*a tyre pressure monitoring system whose information appears in the instrument cluster display;
*a sports exhaust system for the long-wheelbase G 500 Station Wagon model which is basically identical to the exhaust system fitted in the G 55 AMG;
*the "ARTICO" interior package with robust man-made leather appointments, plus
*the new "Cognac" leather upholstery which extends the previous choice of leather appointments in either black or grey by adding a third, brown tone (no-cost option for G 500 model)

In light of these facelift measures, the claim that the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is now more comfortable and innovative than ever has never rung so true. For not only does the G-Class excel by virtue of a luxurious interior ambience, its technology is absolutely state of the art too. The permanent all-wheel drive is complemented by the electronically controlled traction system 4ETS which boosts vehicle grip when pulling away and accelerating on slippery surfaces. What's more, the G Class comes equipped with three engageable differential locks as well as a low-range ratio for tackling tough terrain.

The current G-Class model line-up comprises three engines and three different body variants. The engine power spectrum ranges from the 165 kW/224 hp of the G 320 CDI to the 368 kW/500 hp developed by the G 55 AMG.

The new-look G-Class is available to order now, with deliveries starting in mid April.

Production Dodge Challenger to Debut Next February

The Chrysler Group has announced that the production version of the Dodge Challenger will be unveiled at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show exactly one year from now. We have 356 days to wait until the first official challenger, so to speak, to the Ford Mustang's dominance will enter the ring. Until then, the current Challenger Concept vehicle will be accompanied by a countdown clock at every auto show it attends this year, just to remind Challenger fans how many more saving days, minutes and seconds are left.

We're extremely eager see to what changes will be made on the production version of the Challenger since the concept looks almost ready to go right now. It will be the first coupe built on Chrysler's LX platfrom and, as we reported yesterday, will be built alongside its siblings, the Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Magnum, at the company's Brampton, Ontario plant.

Geneva: Nissan to Debut Next-Generation X-Trail

Nissan will be staging a world premier unveiling for its next generation X-Trail crossover SUV at the coming Geneva Auto Show which is but a few weeks away.

Unlike many such press unveilings of late, there’s no calculated drip-drip of advance media information or teaser sketches, so the first time anyone outside Nissan gets to see the new X-Trail will be at the show itself. And that’s good–we like surprises.

So, what can we tell you? This second generation X-Trail will be spun off the same C-platform family that underpins Nissan’s new small Rogue SUV, and will be targeted mainly at Europe and Japan to fight the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. From what we hear, the trucklet won’t be coming to the U.S. because Nissan will soon have the Rogue and Murano covering where the X-Trail might conceivably go. (We’re not yet sure where that leaves Canada, which presently markets both the current X-trail and Murano).

Expect, then…

[Source: Winding Road]

Follow the jump to continue reading the story.

…another car-based, urbanized SUV with front-drive/selectable all-wheel drive, plus a new-tech 2.0-liter gas four cylinder (MR20DE is a hot tip). A bigger gas 2.5-liter may also be added. An oil burning 2.2 TDi will also be inthe cards for Europe.

The current X-Trail (shown), now seven years old, has been a steady and successful seller, so Nissan’s been in no urgent rush to replace it. The most interesting version has always been the 2.0-liter turbo for Japan, which pumped out a not inconsiderable 276 bhp, which sounded insane but in actual fact, wasn’t.

Geneva: 2008 Ford C-MAX

UPDATE: Official press release added.

Ford of Europe has one of the most amazing line-ups in the automotive industry. The Mondeo and the S-MAX are just a few of the best. There has been talks going around of Mullaly bringing the Mondeo and the S-MAX over to our shores. Since they have yet to be confirmed, we'll leave it that. Geneva will host major debuts of new cars including the new Mondeo and the facelifted Focus C-MAX.

To start off, Ford cut the Focus part of the name. The C-MAX will receive an updated exterior and a minor change of the interior. The new front end cues its larger sibling, the S-MAX. New taillights are in the list of changes. A new interior with better quality and materials and a new rear-lighting system is in there too. Also, nifty options such as panorama roof and 'blue glass'.

More images and the official press release will be added when the C-MAX officially debuts in Geneva next month.

The exterior and interior details, however, have been improved, and the car features a completely redesigned front end incorporating elements of Ford of Europe's 'kinetic design' form language. This combines hard lines with muscular, flowing forms to represent a feeling of energy in motion even when the vehicle is stationary.

Already evident in the new Ford Mondeo, the Ford Galaxy and Ford S-MAX models, key 'kinetic design' elements transform the face of the new C-MAX, giving it a sporty and more expressive character with enhanced emotional appeal.

Giving the C-MAX a fresh new face and repositioning it alongside the S-MAX allows Ford to underline the breadth of its product portfolio, as well as offer two spacious family vehicles that customers want to own, rather than vehicles they have to own.

The Ford line-up of people movers is comprehensive, with the five-seat C-MAX and 5+2-seater S-MAX as tailored, dynamic and highly flexible solutions for customers who want to maximise driving enjoyment, plus the more traditional, full size seven-seat Galaxy MPV for maximum family space.

"The cornerstone of our 'MAX' strategy is to give customers all the features, space and flexibility they need from a family vehicle, but to style the vehicles in a way that allows them to stand out in the crowd, and above all to maximise driving pleasure," said Stephen Odell, Vice President of Marketing, Sales and Service for Ford of Europe. "Both the new C-MAX and the bigger S-MAX are true to this concept – versatile, comfortable and spacious, yet also great fun to drive."

Fresh and Contemporary Exterior
The new Ford C-MAX features a redesigned front end which includes design elements already familiar in Ford S-MAX, and blends these elegantly with the established C-MAX shape to create an even more sporty vehicle.

Ford C-MAX now has the looks to match the way it drives. At the front, the bumper, grilles, bonnet, headlamps and fog lamps have been redesigned to give new Ford
C-MAX a distinctive MAX family look and style.

The sculpted front bumper is a high quality, one-piece design which incorporates a new and distinctive lower trapezoidal grille giving the car a muscular and solid stance. The lower sides of the bumper integrate new vertical fog lights.
The most distinctive feature of the new front end is the new trapezoidal lower grille which combines with a new upper grille, headlamps and three-plane bonnet to reinforce the sporty stance of the new C-MAX.

The upper grille has been redesigned and now incorporates a thick chrome lip on the leading edge of the bonnet as well as a larger Ford oval – both key identifiers for the new Ford 'face'. The three-plane, sculpted bonnet features two distinct lines which flow from the windscreen to the upper grille edges, creating a visual 'power bulge'.

At the rear, new C-MAX features a new bumper which is also smoother, rounder and a little deeper. A key feature at the rear of the car is the redesigned vertical tail lamps which now use LED technology through clear lenses, giving a clean and contemporary look.

"Integrating elements of 'kinetic design' into this redesigned model has been a special challenge. We wanted to bring the vehicle in line with the new members of the family, notably S-MAX, but we also needed to preserve the integrity of the overall C-MAX design," explained Claudio Messale, C-MAX Chief Designer.

Technologies for Comfort and Safety
The new Ford C-MAX features a host of new technologies that enhance both comfort and safety.

Bold new headlamps emphasise high technology and high visibility. When Bi‑Xenon lamps are fitted, a distinctive light strip runs along the top line of the lamp unit and replaces conventional parking light bulbs. These strips feature light blue illumination which adds extra class to the vehicle's overall appearance.

The standard LED tail lamps are a 'first' for Ford and add to the stylish contemporary finish and energy of new Ford C‑MAX. The new tail lamps use LEDs to provide a strong graphic pattern of dots which, when lit, makes Ford C‑MAX immediately recognisable from a distance.

Cost of ownership is further enhanced with stylish power foldable mirrors with integrated indicators on high series models: When folded, they reduce the likelihood of damage in tight parking situations.

A new feature for C-MAX is an optional panorama glass roof which makes the spacious interior even more airy. Covering almost the entire roof area and maximising light and visibility, dark‑tinted to avoid glare, it has internal blinds that can be closed to provide shade and privacy when required. The panorama roof has a 'Solar Reflect' coating to minimise heat intrusion, thus providing a comfortable interior climate that adds to safe vehicle operation.

Another new C-MAX feature is blue glass for the Titanium series, lending even more style and sparkle to the 'modern techno' personality of this top-of-the-range model.

Premium Quality and Flexible Interior
Its functional and warm ambience gives new Ford C-MAX a distinctive interior personality that represents comfort.

All the small details add up to a high level of perceived quality and make a lasting impression on the customer. Reflecting the 'kinetic design' elements of the redesigned exterior, the new C-MAX interior features offer a fresh visual impact with more interest and drama.

Red graphics for the instrument cluster as well as red illumination of switches and dials plus optional Dual Electronic Automatic Temperature Control ( DEATC) and the wide variety of in-car infotainment systems provide visual consistency with
S-MAX as well as a new level of elegance.

An all-new design of optional Sony in-car entertainment systems is available for
C-MAX, and these are designed to integrate seamlessly into the new centre stack. These high-end entertainment systems are available with CD player or integrated
6-CD changer.

For portable audio connectivity, a 3.5mm socket is now standard equipment and is conveniently located in the centre console. Standard MP3 players can easily be connected with the audio system.

A new centre console for high series models features a flowing design which links to the instrument panel, and includes an integrated sliding telescopic armrest for added front seat comfort.

The interior door panels have also changed, with a new soft-touch roll top for Ghia and Titanium models.

Other features which add to the more contemporary feel of the new C-MAX interior include newly designed steering wheel rim with thumb rest area for the Trend series and a new vertical lift, manual Z-shaped handbrake that is easy to use and compact, leaving enough space in the centre console for a 1.5 litre bottle.

New ambient lighting in warm amber shines down on the centre console area from above. New interior environment colours (Arizona/Biscuit, Ebony/Pewter and Ebony/Dark Flint) provide a warm atmosphere and complement a range of new exterior colours.

Sculptured sport seats with increased side support, unique trim and new saw-style stitching enhance both driver orientation and style, while for the rear passengers Ford's bespoke C-MAX Comfort Seat System remains standard for high series models.

The C-MAX Comfort Seat System provides comfortable seating for three people in the second row or the unique ability to fold away the rear centre seat and allow the outer seats to converge diagonally, thus providing even more leg and shoulder room for two passengers.

For maximum luggage carrying capacity, each of the three rear seats can be individually tipped, tumbled or completely removed.

Wide Customer Choice
The new Ford C-MAX will be available in four distinct series – Ambiente, Trend, Ghia and Titanium. An X-pack will also be available for Ghia and Titanium models, while a Sport pack can be specified exclusively for the C-MAX Trend and Titanium. This comprehensive line-up is designed to meet all customer needs and wishes.

The Ghia and Titanium models sit at the top of the C-MAX range, with the new Titanium series delivering maximum comfort combined with 'modern techno' features and style. Standard exterior features like blue tinted glass and 17-inch multi-spoke alloys with 205/50 tyres plus interior elements in "brushed chrome" form an attractive package for customers with an inclination towards the combination of technology and innovation.

Both Ghia and Titanium series can be further upgraded with an X-pack, featuring full leather trim with a 6-way power adjustable driver seat, 4-way manual height adjustable passenger seat – both of them heated – and privacy glass for the Ghia.

For the Titanium series, the X-pack includes the new panorama roof, sport seats with partial leather trim, Bi-Xenon headlamps as well as unique front upper and lower grilles.

The optional Sport pack offers an even more dynamic experience with a lowered sport suspension, specially designed 17-inch alloy wheels, sport seats and a leather steering wheel.

New alloy wheel designs enhance customer choice and wheel sizes range from 16- to 18-inch.

In addition, customers have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of optional features and accessories offered by Ford Customer Service Division FCSD, including different body styling kits to further underline the car's dynamic character.

Ford C-MAX Safety and Driving Quality
For Ford, precise suspension tuning forms the base for a vehicle's active safety package. Driver and passengers can rely on this as a part of Ford's approach to driving dynamics, known as Ford Precision Drive.

New C-MAX now benefits from 5mm of extra track width which guarantees confidence, comfort and control in any driving situation. Other C-MAX active safety features like ABS, EBD, EBA and ESP together form a system that help drivers address critical situations with a greater margin of safety.

A new and additional safety feature is the Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) which greatly improves lighting efficiency and provides better visibility when cornering. AFS is available with conventional halogen lamps which swivel in corners to provide better illumination. According to the steering angle and the driving speed, they slightly pivot their beams to light the road ahead.

Passive safety in C-MAX starts with its structural integrity – an ultra stiff body shell and a rigid passenger safety cell. Both are inherent to Ford's Intelligent Protection System (IPS) which comprises state-of-the-art safety features.

In addition to full-size airbags and side airbags for driver and front passenger, Ford IPS in C-MAX also includes side curtain airbags for the first and second row, pretensioners and load limiters for the front seat belts, a load limiting steering column and a pedal intrusion prevention system.

Three-point seat belts are standard for all rear seats, while ISOFIX brackets are available for the outer rear seats. This arrangement promises not only comfort, but also top-notch safety for travelling children: the original Focus C-MAX achieved a full four-star Euro NCAP rating for child safety.

Ford C-MAX Powertrains
New Ford C-MAX is available with a range of Duratec petrol and Duratorq TDCi diesel engines, depending on market. All offer power and performance for pure driving enjoyment and combine this with good fuel economy and low emissions.

Duratec Petrol Engines
All C-MAX Duratec petrol engines – 1.6-litre, 1.8-litre, and 2.0-litre units – are tuned to emphasise the dynamic road behaviour of the vehicle. Power bands range from 100 PS (74 kW) to 145 PS (107 kW), with peak torque figures ranging from 150 Nm to 185 Nm.

These modern engines feature aluminium cylinder blocks and cylinder heads for reduced weight and a lower centre of gravity.

For motorists looking to make a more positive contribution to the environment, new C-MAX is also available with a 1.8-litre Duratec HE Flexifuel engine.

Without compromising power and driving fun, the C-MAX Flexifuel can run on any mix from 100 per cent petrol to 85 per cent bio-ethanol fuel blend (E85). Since bio-ethanol is derived from renewable biomass sources, the use of bio-ethanol reduces CO 2 emissions by up to 80 per cent by closing the CO 2 circle (well-to-wheel perspective)

Ford's highly affordable Flexifuel models are part of the company's broad portfolio of advanced environmentally friendly technologies. Today, 80 per cent of Focus sales and 40 per cent of all Ford sales in Sweden are Flexifuel models. Focus and C-MAX Flexifuel vehicles are now available in ten European countries.

Also, customers choosing Ford's 2.0-litre Duratec HE engine in selected markets can order it fully converted for use with Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) or Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

Duratorq TDCi Diesel Engines
Ford's Duratorq TDCi diesel engines are recognised as leaders for performance and efficiency and provide smooth and quiet running with low emission levels.

Four engines with 1.6-litre, 1.8-litre, and 2.0-litre displacements are available, two of which are offered with a standard Diesel Particulate Filter system.

Power bands range from 90 PS (66 kW) to 136 PS (100 kW); with maximum torque figures from 215 Nm to an impressive 320 Nm. All of these engines deliver strong pulling power, but not at the expense of fuel consumption. In combined mode (93/116/EG), new Ford C-MAX equipped with the 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi engine consumes just 4.8 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres, and even with the top-of-the-range 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi DPF engine, C-MAX consumes just 5.8 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres in combined mode.

Transmissions
New Ford C-MAX is available with a range of transmissions engineered to complement the choice of engines and their power output and torque levels:

*Ford's Durashift 5-speed manual is available on the 1.6-litre, 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre Duratec engines, and the 1.6-litre and 1.8-litre Duratorq TDCi engines
*The Durashift 6-speed manual is standard for the 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi
*Ford's Durashift 4-speed automatic transmission system is available on the 2.0-litre Duratec engine

Building on Success

"We wanted to improve the current model's strengths even further, and looked closely at the success of S-MAX when developing the new C-MAX," concluded Gunnar Herrmann, Vehicle Line Director for Medium Cars, Ford of Europe. "We're delighted with the end result, and believe the new model combines a fresh and dynamic new look with a host of new features and, above all, premium car levels of quality.

Geneva: Toyota Hybrid X Concept

Toyota is touting the two hybrid concept vehicles it will have on display at the Geneva Motor Show early next month. The first is the FT-HS Concept that debuted last month at the Detroit Auto Show. The second, however, is all new concept called the Hybrid X that Toyota says "proposes a new design language for hybrid models while also acting as a technology showcase for future hybrid cars." From the teaser shot above, it sure looks like a concept Prius that hints at that car's future design direction. One can definitely tell it's a sloped-roof hatchback of some sort, just like the current Prius.

The three-door variant of the Auris hatchback will also make its world premiere in Geneva, coupled with the updated Avensis which will be available with a new touch-screen navigation system.

GMT-900 Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban/Avalanche Z71 Packages

Without so much as an accompanying press release, General Motors released a slew of new images yesterday that show us what the Z71 off-road package looks like on two of the three GMT900 model SUVs. The Avalanche, Tahoe and Suburban are available with a Z71 package that adds, of course, the Z71 off-road suspension, new 18-inch aluminum wheels mounted on combination on-/off-road tires, an automatic locking rear diff, and high-pressure shocks. That's it for the hardcore mechanicals, though buyers who opt for the Z71 package are as much interested in the image these vehicles project as they are their capability.

To that end, Chevy adds the Skid Plate Package, oversized wheel arch flares, tubular assist steps, extra bits of chrome trim, and rectangular fog lamps, along with the requisite Z71 badging so everyone knows you could go off road if you wanted to. The interiors benefit from a Z71-specific gauge cluster and brushed metal look for the dash. The Z71 package certainly adds some cajones to these GMT900 SUVs that will spend most of their lives on smooth pavement, and they also add some serious attitude, especially when ordered in all black.

GM also released images of the updated LTZ trims for the trucks and the production version of the Hybrid variant of the Tahoe.
