Spied: 2012 Hyundai Veloster (First Shots)

The first photos of the 2012 Hyundai Veloster Coupe have surfaced. Apparently snapped during cold weather testing in South Korea, the photos show a car which has begun to evolve from the two-door Veloster concept shown at the 2007 Seoul Auto Show.

n the view of the car’s full length the Veloster’s exaggerated wheel arch is shown. Unlike the concept, it appears to taper off into the sidesill. The car still maintains a steeply-raked windshield, cresting at the intersection with the roof, which then slants downwards in less dramatic fashion than the concept.

The shape of the rear is not terribly clear, but taillight placement looks to be similar to the concept. The cutout in the cover also implies that the car has kept triangular-shaped headlights. We do like the interesting center-placement of dual-exhaust pipes, something carried over and modified from the concept.

Hyundai Motor America CEO John Krafcik has indicated that the production version of the Veloster will retain at least 70% of the concept’s styling. it will use a 140-horsepower 1.6-liter direct-injection engine capable of 40mpg. A turbocharged, 175-hp engine is also expected. One transmission option will likely be a dual-clutch automatic box.

The 2012 Hyundai Veloster will likely hit showrooms by the end of 2010 or the beginning of 2011. In the U.S. it may be used to replace the Tiburon coupe.

The Pill

This looks like it will be a hot looking 2 door coupe. The rear end overhang appears to be very short,(closer in looks to the concept)but based on the heavy camo this seems to be just a test mule rather than a near pre-production.

I have read where it has been speculated that the powertrain offerings may be a base 1.6 GDI 4 cylinder, with 150 horsepower and an uplevel a 2.0 turbo pushing the front wheels at 185 horsepower.

If Hyundai is able get the right weight to power ratio optimitzed, this could be a real, sweet screamer, packed with the right amount of fun-to-drive factor!

Can you say Accent hatch? According to the company Veloster is Accent sized. It looks like its Accent sized. Plus humm.. it will be a 2012 model, and that Accent Hatch redesign will be a 2012 model too.

Also, the best clue of all. Accent sedan will share the same powertrains.

Hyundai, you can let the secret out now. Ive seen Versa, Swift, Aveo, and Yaris spyshots, and drawings The coming Accent is way above the class.

LMAO. We might be stalkers, but guys like me and Pill just want Hyundai to put their best foot foward.

We want to have not just class Leading products, but Class changing products. I have a vision for this company, and Hyundai is delivering more and more of that Vision everyday.

I want to make sure they dont go astray, and badging this car with Any other name besides Accent would hurt us on the small car front.

The reason why. If Veloster was sold along side Accent sedan and Accent Hatch, they would cannibalize each other in terms of powertrains, equippment, etc…. Plus, the Accent name still wouldnt get the big boost it needs to be Golf, MINI, etc….. it would take way too long for this car without a hot Hatch to draw them into dealers so they can just buy the GS model instead, and the audience they are targeting are very impatient.

The Accent has to draw people into the dealer like Genesis in these times of uncertain oil prices. The Accent is the Second Best selling small car in the US. In terms of products we should never settle for second place.

hm… class changing? Class innovating would be more like it. Hyundai always seems to have the best specs for their cars with the best deal, why arn't they the number 1 company?
